Flood and Earthquake Damage Think about Flood and Earthquake damage. These detesters are not normally covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy and if you feel this cover is necessary, you may need an additional policy. All Risk vs. Named Peril When choosing a homeowners insurance policy its important to know what it covers and what it doesn't. An "All Risk" policy (the standard), will cover all and any losses which occur to your home unless it's excluded on the policy. A" Named Peril" policy is just that, it only covers losses to those perils listed on the policy. Deductible A deductible is, simply put, self-insuring. A deductible is the amount you decide you will be responsible for in a claim. For example, if your total claim for damages is $2,000, and you decided to carry a $500 deductible, you have chosen to carry $500 dollars of the financial burden to repair the damage, while the insurance company covers the remaining $1,500. Perils Perils are simply the entity that caused you or your property damage. Perils are usually Acts of God such as lightening hitting your home, wind, snow, etc, but they may also be human errors. A standard homeowners insurance policy has a group of perils it covers. Any perils not listed can be covered by adding on an Endorsement, for example Flood or Earthquake coverage as mentioned above. Exclusions Certain perils or risks are excluded from all standard homeowner insurance policy's for two basic reasons: they can be covered better under a different insurance product, or they are not warranted for particular reasons (temptation of fraud, despair, natural change etc.).
